Bmw Rear Window Shade Buttons
Same problem on my 2011 550i. It was stuck up, would move an inch in and stop. Sometimes it would finally go back down. Originally my SA told me it was 1200 to fix as the whole thing is a one piece replacement. I'm under CPO on it so we had to do some 'talking' about whether the 'sunshade' exclusion in the CPO excluded the shade or not.
My argument being that mechanical and electrical components are covered, the 'shade' is actually fine, the equipment to move it is obviously not.Long story short, the shop foreman got involved and they're going to swap the shade motor. Hopefully that resolves it. Same problem on my 2011 550i. It was stuck up, would move an inch in and stop. Sometimes it would finally go back down.

Works great now.I'm going to use this approach once I get my car in for service on Monday. I have to get brakes in addition to the normal oil service, so might as well get it done now since my CPO Warranty is out in 13,000 miles.:D. I'm going to use this approach once I get my car in for service on Monday. I have to get brakes in addition to the normal oil service, so might as well get it done now since my CPO Warranty is out in 13,000 miles.:DI have not had any issue with the shades before, but I do have an issue with my trunk now. But, in my case, I just started new lease in January. If I were in your shoes, I definitely would consider it a smart move less hesitant to wait to get any issue fixed so that I did not have to try to convince dealers to cover repairs.I personally have my windows tinted, including front windshield, but I still use my screens almost daily and would drive me crazy to have to decide between stuck up or down. I sometimes wish the rear driver- and passenger-side screens were electronic like the 7-series; however, I guess that would be one more potential mechanism to break.

I sometimes wish the rear driver- and passenger-side screens were electronic like the 7-series; however, I guess that would be one more potential mechanism to break.Mine just rattle and its driving me nuts every time I go over a bump.Is there a remedy for this- I don't want to take it in because they may just make it worse. Some of these so called factory trained techs are a joke.
Mine is stuck up, so there it will stay for the remainder of the summer. I'm hoping one day it will magically fix itself, but we all know that won't happen.:(Magic does happen.Wednesday of this week I hit the button on mine and it went up, and there it stayed. I searched and found this thread and some other info on the internet, none of which was very encouraging. The rods would move in about an inch and then stop.
I tried hitting the button and then gently nudging them to get them to go down, but it didn't work.Today (Saturday) I parked on the street in front of our house this morning, and when I pulled the 5er back up the driveway this evening, I decided to try the button again, and the sunshade went down. Was it the heat or that I had the windows down when I pressed the sunshade button? I had the same issue. I ended up ordering/installing a new roller sunshade. Part 1 ($614.39 + shipping).
It.8217;s an easy install. For me it was easier than changing out the cabin filter.:C)However, I was messing with the old broken one.just curious if I could diagnosis the issue. The motor seemed fine.
The rails looked good and no broken pieces. There is a site that claims they have a part that will fix it. But I looked at that and didn.8217;t see that as an issue. Mine just got stuck a few inches from top on the way down. Anyhow, I sprayed WD-40 everywhere possible. Still same problem.
I even removed the screws by the motor that seems to have some adjustments, albeit small, to move it & adjust motor position side to side. That didn.8217;t help either. But, then I noticed another screw, that didn.8217;t seem to hold the motor in place.
Picture below. I turned it to loosen with about 6-8 rotations.
Then I tested the sunshade and boom. It went down! I.8217;m not sure if that is some sort of torque adjustment or I just got lucky with the combination of doing all of the other troubleshooting tests. Since I ordered and had the new sunshade already, and with a 25% restock fee, I went ahead and replaced it anyway.
So now I have 2 working sunshades. You may want to give that a shot.Steps to install roller sunshade:1.Remove 3 screws in trunk2.Fold seats down (hopefully you have that option, if not I think seats are easy to remove)3.Remove 5 plastic screws with plastic prying tool, 2 of these are hidden behind 2 (left/right) seat pieces. Just pull those up and out to remove the seat pieces.4.Remove 2 ABS (airbag) clips and then 2 screws. ABS clips were hardest thing. I had to use Very thin screwdriver and hammer. But then they just pop off. None of my pry tools were thin enough.5.Lift rear deck/parcel up.jigging it.
And then go ahead a just unclip the speaker wires.6.Take sunshade out from bottom. Just angle it and bend the parcel/deck to wiggle it out.https://photos.app.goo.gl/hVzgKLZlWlOLQoRF2. Just in case someone will break the plastic clips that are inserted in the metal arms of the rear sunshade - you can replace those.Borrowed the car to my brother (he was visiting from another country) and his boys had an argument and managed to break off the two plastic clips that are inserted in the arms and then slide on the track. After hours of work (no luck trying to glue using epoxy) I did fix it by buying the clips for E60 (you can find them on ebay). Turns out they are ok for f10 too.Hours of work but saved a lot of $$$.Sent from my iPhone using Bimmerfest. I installed a piece of black ABS plastic within the track about 10 mm from where the arms were stopping at full extension.
This prevents the arms from extending too far and losing the mechanical advantage to close. $1.00 fixThis saved me! I had tried lubricants and screw adjustments as previously mentioned to no avail. Right before I ordered a new unit I found this post and ended up with the same simple solution. I used the black wire from within an old extension cord. The diameter was perfect to wedge into the track. I had to do 3 inches for mine to operate properly.
Slight loss of shade coverage but free repair is worth it!P.S. For those following the removal instructions in an earlier post, the C pillar trim must be removed and the screw is under the ABS labelled cap.
